Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing

What is EMDR therapy?

EMDR is a structured therapy designed to help you heal from distressing memories or experiences...

Especially the ones that feel stuck in your mind and body, no matter how much you try to talk through them.

It’s not your typical talking therapy.

Instead of going over the same ground again and again, EMDR supports your brain to naturally process what happened, using side-to-side eye movements, or bilateral stimulation such as tapping, or sounds.

Think of it as helping your brain “file away” trauma, so it stops jumping out and causing havoc in the present.

It’s gentle, but powerful.

And it works.

Who is EMDR Therapy for?

EMDR can be life-changing for people who are living with the aftershocks of trauma, whether from a single event or from complex, ongoing experiences.

You might have:

  • Survived a car crash, assault, sudden loss, or medical emergency
  • Grown up in an unsafe or neglectful home
  • Experienced abuse, violence, or frightening relationships
  • Struggled with birth trauma, relational trauma, or feeling like your nervous system never got to switch off
  • Or maybe you’re just feeling stuck, like the past keeps hijacking your present

If your body is always on high alert, or your emotions feel too big, or totally numb, EMDR might be for you.

How it works

It’s collaborative and client-led. Nothing happens without your say-so.

We don’t dive straight into trauma processing. We begin by building safety and stability, developing resources and coping strategies, and making sure you feel grounded and ready.

When we do begin reprocessing, you won’t need to share every detail of what happened (unless you want to). The focus is on what your brain and body are still holding, and helping them to let go.

Bilateral stimulation (eye movements, tapping, sounds) helps your brain sort through what’s stuck, so the emotional charge gets turned down. You don’t relive the trauma, you reprocess it.

What to expect

  •  90-minute sessions at £120
  • A safe, structured process that moves at your pace
  • Physical, emotional and cognitive shifts that often begin after just a few sessions
  • Support for both mind and body symptoms; tension, fatigue, digestive issues, racing thoughts, or feeling frozen
  • A sense of relief, clarity, and calm as trauma loses its grip

Clients often describe it as “something lifting” or “finally feeling like myself again...”

Reassurance & accessibility

It might feel a bit strange at first, but that’s okay.

It’s normal to feel unsure or emotional, and there’s no “right” way to respond.

Some things you should know:

EMDR is done with you, not to you. You’re in control at every stage.

We go gently. We build safety before doing any memory work.

You don’t need perfect recall. Fragments, sensations, or feelings are enough.

You don’t have to talk through everything in detail if you don’t want to.

We check in regularly, adapt as needed, and work in partnership.

How this differs from other therapy

Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR doesn’t rely on verbal processing. You don’t need to explain or analyse every memory.

It’s structured but adaptable, evidence-based but deeply personal.

This isn’t about pushing you to talk through the hardest things. It’s about helping your nervous system understand that it’s over, that you’re safe now.

And while EMDR is powerful on its own, what makes it different in this space, what clients often tell me is the way I hold that space.

Warm, grounded, and non-judgemental. No ego, no assumptions, just a validating, accepting relationship where you can show up exactly as you are.

Get in touch
  • Will this stir everything up and make me feel worse?

Not if we go gently and at your pace. The first stages of EMDR are all about building stability and safety. Processing only starts when you feel ready.

  • What if I don’t remember everything?

That’s totally fine. EMDR works with how trauma is held in the body and nervous system, not just the mind. You don’t need full memories for it to be effective.

  • It sounds a bit...weird...

Yep! EMDR might feel different to anything you’ve tried, but it’s backed by over 30 controlled studies, and recommended by the WHO (World Health Organisation) and NHS for trauma.

  • I’ve tried therapy before. Why would this be different?

If talking alone hasn’t helped, EMDR offers another route. It gets to the root of trauma, helping your body and brain to finally process what happened, so it doesn’t keep showing up uninvited.

Take your time. Have a read through the pages on PTSD, dissociation, or how I work if you’d like a better sense of whether this is for you.

If you’re feeling curious, hopeful, nervous, or all three, that’s a good place to start.
